Friday Book Review~Understood Betsy

It is Friday yet again-the last Friday of February! I hope you enjoy this week's Book Review! :)

Understood Betsy written by Dorothy Canfield Fisher

Little 9-year-old Elizabeth Ann is an orphan living with her Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances. Elizabeth Ann is treated very carefully by her Aunts, because they want no harm to ever occur to her. Elizabeth Ann loves her Aunts, especially her Aunt Frances because she really understands her.

Ever since she was taken in by her Aunts, she has heard them discuss in whispers about "the horrible Putney cousins", but how was she to know that she would be living with "the horrible Putney cousins" when her Great Aunt Harriet gets a disease and needs to live in a warmer climate! When Elizabeth Ann arrives, she finds that the Putney cousins (her Aunt Harriet, Uncle Henry, and Aunt Ann), do have quaint ways. Aunt Ann is making her cook, pets can sleep in the house, and she has to do chores! She even has to go to school all by herself! With all of this, Elizabeth Ann learns indenpendence- that she can do things for herself, and she finds confindence too. Along with this confidence, Elizabeth Ann gets a new nickname-Betsy. Lots of adventures, Betsy has including going to the fair, starting a sewing circle, and making new friends at school! When the year is up, and Aunt Frances comes back to get her niece, Besty finds that she doesn't want to leave! Aunt Frances also finds a changed, Elizabeth Ann.

This was a very cute book, and I really enjoyed it! It is quite an old book, because it was first published by Henry Holt and Company in 1917! The author narrates the book, and it feels as if she is speaking straight to you! This would make a great read-aloud book for the family, since it is slow-paced and great for all ages! :)

Happy reading,
Liz
