Friday Book Review~Understood Betsy

It is Friday yet again-the last Friday of February! I hope you enjoy this week's Book Review! :)

Understood Betsy written by Dorothy Canfield Fisher

Little 9-year-old Elizabeth Ann is an orphan living with her Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances. Elizabeth Ann is treated very carefully by her Aunts, because they want no harm to ever occur to her. Elizabeth Ann loves her Aunts, especially her Aunt Frances because she really understands her.

Ever since she was taken in by her Aunts, she has heard them discuss in whispers about "the horrible Putney cousins", but how was she to know that she would be living with "the horrible Putney cousins" when her Great Aunt Harriet gets a disease and needs to live in a warmer climate! When Elizabeth Ann arrives, she finds that the Putney cousins (her Aunt Harriet, Uncle Henry, and Aunt Ann), do have quaint ways. Aunt Ann is making her cook, pets can sleep in the house, and she has to do chores! She even has to go to school all by herself! With all of this, Elizabeth Ann learns indenpendence- that she can do things for herself, and she finds confindence too. Along with this confidence, Elizabeth Ann gets a new nickname-Betsy. Lots of adventures, Betsy has including going to the fair, starting a sewing circle, and making new friends at school! When the year is up, and Aunt Frances comes back to get her niece, Besty finds that she doesn't want to leave! Aunt Frances also finds a changed, Elizabeth Ann.

This was a very cute book, and I really enjoyed it! It is quite an old book, because it was first published by Henry Holt and Company in 1917! The author narrates the book, and it feels as if she is speaking straight to you! This would make a great read-aloud book for the family, since it is slow-paced and great for all ages! :)

Happy reading,
Liz

Friday Book Review~Diary of a Worm

This was one of  my favorite books when I was younger! I hope you like it too!

Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin
This is a diary by a little boy worm writing about all of his worm adventures. Having fun with his friend spider, going to a dance, scaring his sisters party guests, and getting caught eating his homework are only a few of his many adventures of being a worm. This is a truly funny and cute book that you must read! I would recommend this book for all ages, it would be a great read-aloud book for the whole family! :)

Happy reading,

Friday Book Review~The Tale of Despereaux

I can't believe it has been a week already! Hope you enjoy this week's Book Review! :)

The Tale of Despereaux
Written by Kate Dicamillo

Despereaux Tilling is a mouse, but he doesn't act like a mouse at all. He has extremely large ears, loves to read, and likes the outside world--and even likes humans. He dreams of being a knight in shining armor, and saving a princess. When he talks to the Princess Pea, the mouse councils finds out and charges him with a trial, which sends him to the dugeon--where the rats live.

Before this tale of Despereaux even happened, a different one began about a rat named Roscuro. Roscuro is different than other rats, he likes light. Living in a dark world in the dugeon, light is rarely found. This makes Roscuro venture out into the world of light, into the castle above. What he doesn't know is that he, one rat, will change the kingdom forever.

During this tale of Roscurro, another one is also happening--one of a servant girl named Miggery Sow. Miggery Sow dreams of being a princess, but how could she be one being as poor as she is?

All three of these tales come together into one big one, with the hero being a strange mouse, named Despereaux.

This is such a cute book! The unnamed narrator of the story, adds humor, wit, and intelligence to the story, which makes it so fun to read! It is also a book filled with adventure! I recommend this book to both boys and girls 9 and up. :)

Happy Reading!

Friday Book Review~Ragtag

Here is the first of many of my Friday Book Reviews! I hope you enjoy them!

Ragtag
Written by: Karl Wolf-Morgenlander

Ragtag is a little swallow, and there's nothing he loves more than sailing through the skies of Boston. The city is Ragtag's home and he loves it, but everything changes when the birds of the city, are attacked by the Talon Empire. The vicious raptors were forced out of their woodland home by humans, so now they are intent on taking Boston for themselves. The city birds know that they are no match for the Talon Empire, they are much bigger and stronger than they are. Even Ragtag, knows that he isn't of any help, everyone tells him that he is too lazy, too slow, and too young. Though, Ragtag loves his home, and is willing to protect it--even if he has to risk his own life. Ragtag has a kind of strength, that may be more powerful than the Talon Empire.

This story is full of adventure! It is a new book, published in 2009, and when I saw it on the New Books shelf at our library I just had to read it! It makes the book very interesting being about birds! This book does have some violence in it, though. I recommend this book to boys and girls 10 and up.

Happy Reading,
Liz

Welcome!

Hi! Welcome to my Reading Notebook!

My name is Liz, and I am a 15 year old homeschooled Christian girl. One of my favorite things to do is read! My favorite books are Historical fiction! I love to read books that could have taken place back in time. I also enjoy adventure books and books where the main character is an animal!

Along with reading books, I love to write about them--and share them with others! That's what I want to do here! Every Friday I am going to be posting a new book review, and maybe I will post about some other book-related things too!

I hope you enjoy your stay here, and I would love to hear what your favorite books are!
Happy Reading,

Liz
